At Warmset Australia, our role goes well beyond supplying underfloor heating.

In fact, the most important work we do often happens during preliminary conversations with clients, architects, builders and project managers about how the heating system will actually live within the building.

This is usually the point where we uncover ideas that make sense at first glance, but which can compromise comfort, efficiency or long-term satisfaction.

Below are the most common scenarios we discuss with clients, and how we help guide them toward decisions that genuinely work in their favour over time.

1. Insulation: When Clients Consider Skipping It

Most clients haven’t really thought about insulation beneath underfloor heating. This usually comes down to two things: a general lack of insulation culture, and the desire to reduce upfront costs.

We explain that insulation, while technically optional, plays a crucial role: it ensures the heat generated by the system moves up into the room, rather than disappearing into the structure below.

Without insulation, heat loss through the subfloor increases and to achieve the same level of comfort, running costs inevitably rise.

We’re all used to insulating walls and ceilings, yet heat escapes through the ground just as easily. If you’re considering underfloor heating, doing a simple benefit-cost analysis on insulation isn’t a luxury, it’s common sense.

2. Floor Build-Up and Thermal Mass

Clients often select thick screeds and dense floor finishes for aesthetic or construction reasons, without realising the impact this can have on heating performance.

Sometimes, to simplify construction levels, a very thick screed is used, resulting in a total floor build-up of 50–60 mm. When this happens, our conversations usually focus on:

  • whether thermal mass is actually beneficial for how the space will be used
  • how expectations around response time need to be adjusted
  • alternative build-ups that preserve performance without compromising design intent, such as introducing insulating foam boards beneath the heating mat

3. Heating Coverage

Particularly in large open-plan living areas, clients sometimes suggest heating only part of the floor, assuming warmth will naturally spread across the space.

We explain that radiant comfort depends on coverage, not proximity.

In wide, open areas, partial coverage often leads to uneven comfort and the system has to work harder in order to compensate, resulting in higher running costs and less satisfaction.

Our advice is to follow our advice really! Always size the system coverage based on:

  • room volume
  • how the space will be used
  • comfort expectations not just square metres on a plan.

4. The Building Envelope and Glazing Choices

Clients understandably prioritise visual impact: large glazed areas, natural light and uninterrupted views. However, they can underestimate the importance or upgrading glazing performance at the same time.

Heating performs at its best when the building envelope can actually retain heat.

In homes with extensive glazing, especially if single-glazed:

  • heat loss can be significant
  • warm-up times increase
  • the system is forced into a constant catch-up cycle

Our role is not to challenge architectural intent, but to ensure the heating design and the building envelope are working together, not against each other.

Bottom line: Warmset can deliver exceptional comfort and efficiency but only when the surrounding decisions support it. The system doesn’t operate in isolation. It responds to the environment it’s placed in.
