What Is Far Infrared (FIR) Heating?
The Science Behind Warmset

What Is Far Infrared Heating? Understanding the FIR Spectrum
Have you ever felt the sun’s warmth on a cool day? That’s far infrared (FIR) – the same heat principle behind Warmset’s electric underfloor heating. FIR waves warm your body directly, not just the air, which is why the comfort feels so different from ducted or split systems. Within the spectrum, Far Infrared (FIR) are the safest and most beneficial form of infrared, transferring energy up to 4.5 cm beneath the skin purely in the form of deeply penetrating heat.
Safe and effective, FIR technologies in various forms have been very popular in Europe for decades across a wide range of sectors, including the medical, agricultural, biological, fashion, logistics sectors and many others. Consider this:
- Our skin thermoreceptors are naturally designed to absorb 80% of FIR heating, creating a comforting “inside-out” feeling of warmth.
- Because it warms the body itself rather than just the air, FIR is recognized as one of the most efficient and comfortable heating methods.
- FIR improves relaxation, circulation, and recovery, and is widely used in wellness saunas, sports therapy, incubators, certain medical applications and more.
We believe that FIR heating is the human body’s most natural heat source!

FAQs
What does far infrared mean?
“Far infrared” refers to the far end of the infrared light spectrum – wavelengths of approximately 6–14 micrometres. At this range, infrared radiation is invisible to the eye but deeply warming to the human body. Unlike near or mid-infrared, far infrared penetrates 4–5 cm beneath the skin, which is why it feels more like natural sunshine than a hot air blast.
What is far infrared heat?
Far infrared heat is radiant thermal energy in the FIR wavelength range. Unlike convective heat (from ducted air or fan heaters), FIR warms objects and people directly — meaning you feel warm even if the room air is still cool. Warmset’s underfloor heating mats emit FIR from beneath your floor, turning the entire floor surface into a gentle, full-room radiant panel.
Is far infrared heating safe?
Yes. Far infrared is the same type of warmth emitted by the human body and by the sun — it is completely non-ionising and cannot cause radiation damage. Warmset is additionally certified Zero EMF by Nemko, meaning it emits no measurable electromagnetic field radiation. FIR should not be confused with UV light, X-rays, or ionising radiation.
What is far infrared technology used for?
Far infrared technology is widely used in Europe and Asia for underfloor heating, wellness saunas, sports therapy, medical incubators, agricultural drying, and textile processing. In the built environment, FIR underfloor heating is growing rapidly in Australia as a clean, zero-maintenance alternative to ducted and hydronic systems.
Helping You Achieve the Highest Standards
Thanks to Warmset’s heating performance, your project may qualify to achieve higher standards of energy efficiency and thermal comfort under various national and international certification programs, such as WELL Building Standard® or Green Star certification.
If you’re a homeowner, architect, or builder aiming to maximize sustainability and performance in your projects and achieve the next level of recognition in sustainable and efficient building construction, our innovative far-infrared underfloor heating system may be the perfect fit.

How Does Warmset FIR Heating Compare to Other Heating Systems?

Warmset vs Electric Cable
Both rely on electric resistance to generate heat at the start, but electric cables rely more on heating via conduction through the floor materials rather than effective, body-warming far-infrared radiation.
FIR vs Hydronic
Though both feel gentle in terms of warmth perception and running costs, Warmset’s system offers faster and easier installation, no required short or long term maintenance and more immediate responsiveness compared to water-based coils.
FIR with Ducted Air
While forced-air systems can provide cooling in warmer months, they can be noisy, inefficient, and prone to uneven heating. In contrast, Warmset’s radiant FIR approach is silent, invisible, uniform, and healthy.
